Abstrak This book is intended to assist all those who wish to have access to infor mation on agricultural and horticultural pests in South-east Asia. Relatively few species of animals compete with Man while feeding, and these few often only attain pest status because Man has cultivated crops which are their preferred hosts. The great majority of animals including insects, are, however, harmless or even useful. To deal with these pest problems, the animals should be correctly identi fied, and ther life cycle studied to indicate vulnerable stages in their devel- opment It is also important that the role of non injurious organisms, partic- ularly beneficial species, in the ecosystem of the pest be understood so that an integrated control approach can be taken The present edition is essentially the work of my dear friend, the late Dr. LG.E. Kalshoven, who continued with the major task, first undertaken by Dammerman (1919, 1929), of describing the immense assemblage of agricultural and horticultural pests and beneficial species in Indonesia and adjacent countries. In this work Kalshoven emphasised the more practical, rather than basic aspects of pest problems, and I have followed this course by concentrating on the more significant pests as well as the beneficial species associated with them. The store of information contained in "Kalshoven" was in danger of becoming lost, as the book was written in the Dutch language and was also out of print. The present English edition has been considerably shortened because of the current irrelevance of some of the contents and cost considerations. However, some sections have been expanded to include at least some of the large amount of additional information that has accumulated over the past 30 years. I have undertaken this enterprise as a posthumous honour to the author together with the objective of providing a guide for entomologists, agricul tural advisers and farmers in South-east Asia generally, but most particularly for those in Indonesia. Thanks to the generosity of the Publisher and others
