As in many fields, there is a considerable gap between the frontier of knowledge and the tools that practitioners in the field are applying. At the same time, there is substantial controversy about how to measure risk and risk preferences, and how to test alternative descriptive models. The controversy about these questions takes place on the applied level and overlaps as well with unresolved issues in the behavioral and managerial sciences. In order to get a better picture of what is being done in this area and to stimulate new research, the Research and Training Network (RTN) of the Agricultural Development Council invited a diverse group of researchers to CIMMYT, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, at El Batan, Mexico. The conference was held March 9-12, 1976. One of the major results of that conference is this reference volume of alternative research approaches to the subject of risk and uncertainty in agricultural development. The introductory chapter attempts to summarize the issues raised by the conference papers, the discussions of those issues at the conference, and an elaboration of them in correspondence as Dr. James Roumasset edited this volume. Most of the papers presented at the conference are included herein. The Research and Training Network is supported under a grant from the Agency for International Development. 636:619 636:619 ROU r 00000002269
