Sufficient C. perf- ringens alphatoxinwas present in the body fluids of this animal to causedeath. From theresults of this investigation it is possible that transportstress and a gross change in diet induce rumenandintestinal stasis which provideafavourable environmentfor the proliferation of C. perfringenstype Aand also theproduction of alphatoxin. Considering that this animal hadreceived prophylactic vaccination before shipment, the conclusion must be that this animal and possibly others in this outbreak do not have sufficient circulating alphaantitoxin to neutralise the quantities of alpha toxin absorbed from the small intestine.
